A glass of Milk, paid in Full
One day, a poor boy who was selling goods from door to door to pay his way through school, found he had only one thin dime left, and he was hungry. He decided he would ask for a meal at the next house. However, he lost his nerve when a lovely young woman opened the door.
Instead of a meal he asked for a drink of water. She thought he looked hungry so brought him a large glass of milk.
He drank it slowly, and then asked, “How much do I owe you?”
“You don’t owe me anything,” she replied. “Mother has taught us never to accept pay for a kindness.”
He said, “Then I thank you from my heart.”
As Howard Kelly left that house, he not only felt stronger physically, but his faith in God and man was strong also. He had been ready to give up and quit.
Year’s later that young woman became critically ill. The local doctors were baffled. They finally sent her to the big city, where they called in specialists to study her rare disease.
Dr. Howard Kelly was called in for the consultation. When he heard the name of the town she came from, a strange light filled his eyes. Immediately he rose and went down the hall of the hospital to her room.
Dressed in his doctor’s gown he went in to see her. He recognized her at once. He went back to the consultation room determined to do his best to save her life. From that day he gave special attention to the case.
After a long struggle, the battle was won. Dr. Kelly requested the business office to pass the final bill to him for approval. He looked at it, then wrote something on the edge and the bill was sent to her room.
She feared to open it, for she was sure it would take the rest of her life to pay for it all. Finally she looked, and something caught her attention on the side of the bill. She began to read the following words:
“Paid in full with one glass of milk.
Signed, Dr. Howard Kelly.”

একদিন, একটি দরিদ্র ছেলে যে স্কুলে যাওয়ার জন্য বাড়ি বাড়ি গিয়ে জিনিসপত্র বিক্রি করছিল, দেখতে পেল তার মাত্র এক পাতলা টাকা বাকি আছে এবং সে ক্ষুধার্ত। সে ঠিক করল পাশের বাড়িতে খাবার চাইবে। যাইহোক, একজন সুন্দরী তরুণী দরজা খুললে তিনি তার স্নায়ু হারিয়ে ফেলেন।
খাবারের পরিবর্তে তিনি পানি পান করতে চাইলেন। সে ভাবল তাকে ক্ষুধার্ত লাগছে তাই তার জন্য এক গ্লাস দুধ নিয়ে এল।
তিনি ধীরে ধীরে পান করলেন, তারপর জিজ্ঞেস করলেন, "আমি তোমার কাছে কত ঋণী?"
"আপনি আমার কাছে কিছু দেন না," সে উত্তর দিল। "মা আমাদের শিখিয়েছেন দয়ার জন্য কখনই বেতন গ্রহণ করবেন না।"
তিনি বললেন, "তাহলে আমি আপনাকে আমার হৃদয় থেকে ধন্যবাদ জানাই।"
হাওয়ার্ড কেলি সেই বাড়িটি ছেড়ে যাওয়ার সাথে সাথে তিনি কেবল শারীরিকভাবে শক্তিশালী বোধ করেননি, তবে ঈশ্বর এবং মানুষের প্রতি তার বিশ্বাসও শক্তিশালী ছিল। তিনি হাল ছেড়ে দিতে প্রস্তুত ছিলেন।
বছর পর ওই তরুণী গুরুতর অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়েন। এতে বিভ্রান্ত হয়ে পড়েন স্থানীয় চিকিৎসকরা। অবশেষে তারা তাকে বড় শহরে পাঠায়, যেখানে তারা তার বিরল রোগ অধ্যয়নের জন্য বিশেষজ্ঞদের ডেকেছিল।
ডাঃ হাওয়ার্ড কেলিকে পরামর্শের জন্য ডাকা হয়েছিল। তিনি যে শহর থেকে এসেছেন তার নাম শুনে তার চোখে অদ্ভুত আলো ভরে উঠল। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে সে উঠে হাসপাতালের হল থেকে তার রুমে চলে গেল।
ডাক্তারের গাউন পরে তিনি তাকে দেখতে গেলেন। সঙ্গে সঙ্গে তাকে চিনতে পারল। তিনি তার জীবন বাঁচানোর জন্য যথাসাধ্য চেষ্টা করার জন্য দৃঢ়প্রতিজ্ঞ পরামর্শ কক্ষে ফিরে যান। ওই দিন থেকেই তিনি মামলার দিকে বিশেষ নজর দেন।
দীর্ঘ সংগ্রামের পর জয় হলো। ডঃ কেলি অনুমোদনের জন্য তাকে চূড়ান্ত বিল পাস করার জন্য ব্যবসা অফিসকে অনুরোধ করেছিলেন। তিনি এটির দিকে তাকালেন, তারপর প্রান্তে কিছু লিখলেন এবং বিলটি তার ঘরে পাঠানো হয়েছিল।
তিনি এটি খুলতে ভয় পেয়েছিলেন, কারণ তিনি নিশ্চিত ছিলেন যে এটির সমস্ত মূল্য দিতে তার বাকি জীবন লাগবে। অবশেষে সে তাকাল, এবং বিলের পাশে কিছু তার দৃষ্টি আকর্ষণ করল। তিনি নিম্নলিখিত শব্দগুলি পড়তে শুরু করলেন:

A few days ago I landed at the Bombay Airport (India) and took a cab to my scheduled destination in South Bombay.
I was enjoying the busy traffic with people rushing in every possible directions then we got stranded at a very busy intersection.
As we waited for the signal to turn green, my eyes met up with a poor young boy, about 12 years old. He removed a piece of bread from his pocket and took a bite.
As he was about to take his next bite, a stray dog wagged his tail looking at him. Without hesitation, he sat down and put the bread on the road for the dog to eat.
The dog sniffed the bread and walked away. The boy waited until he was sure the dog was gone then he picked up the bread and ate it!
My heart cried and wanted to walk up to the boy but before I could open the door the signal turned Green and our car drove away. I kept thinking about the boy and later during my evening meal I realized that I was thinking of approaching the boy but never did, I could have stopped the car and walked up to him which again I never did.
All I did was “thinking” and this poor little boy who had only one piece of bread without any hesitation sharing it with the dog, though he himself seemed to be very hungry.
I learnt one of the biggest lessons in my life which that boy taught me without a conversation. He taught me to share with love and happiness. I am so blessed to have learnt this beautiful lesson from my ‘little unknown master’. It is my moral duty to share this incident with all my friends across the globe and be blessed with happiness.

একটি দরিদ্র যুবক এবং কুকুর
কয়েকদিন আগে আমি বোম্বে বিমানবন্দরে (ভারত) অবতরণ করি এবং দক্ষিণ বোম্বেতে আমার নির্ধারিত গন্তব্যে একটি ক্যাব নিয়ে যাই।
আমি ব্যস্ত ট্র্যাফিক উপভোগ করছিলাম যেখানে লোকেরা সম্ভাব্য প্রতিটি দিকে ছুটে আসছে তখন আমরা একটি খুব ব্যস্ত মোড়ে আটকা পড়েছিলাম।
আমরা যখন সিগন্যাল সবুজ হওয়ার জন্য অপেক্ষা করছিলাম, তখন আমার চোখ প্রায় 12 বছর বয়সী একটি দরিদ্র যুবকের সাথে দেখা গেল। সে পকেট থেকে এক টুকরো রুটি বের করে একটা কামড় দিল।
যখন সে তার পরের কামড় নিতে যাচ্ছিল, তখন একটি বিপথগামী কুকুর তার দিকে তাকিয়ে তার লেজ নেড়েছিল। দ্বিধা ছাড়াই সে বসে কুকুরের খাওয়ার জন্য রুটিটি রাস্তার উপর রেখে দিল।
কুকুরটি রুটি শুঁকে নিয়ে চলে গেল। ছেলেটি অপেক্ষা করলো যতক্ষণ না সে নিশ্চিত হয় কুকুরটি চলে গেছে তারপর সে রুটিটি তুলে খেয়ে ফেলল!
আমার হৃদয় কেঁদে উঠল এবং ছেলেটির কাছে যেতে চাইল কিন্তু আমি দরজা খুলতে পারার আগেই সিগন্যালটি সবুজ হয়ে গেল এবং আমাদের গাড়িটি চলে গেল। আমি ছেলেটির কথা ভাবতে থাকি এবং পরে আমার সন্ধ্যার খাবারের সময় আমি বুঝতে পারি যে আমি ছেলেটির কাছে যাওয়ার কথা ভাবছিলাম কিন্তু কখনও করিনি, আমি গাড়ি থামিয়ে তার কাছে যেতে পারতাম যা আমি আর কখনও করিনি।
আমি যা করেছি তা হল "চিন্তা" এবং এই দরিদ্র ছোট ছেলেটির কাছে মাত্র এক টুকরো রুটি ছিল বিনা দ্বিধায় কুকুরের সাথে ভাগ করে নিল, যদিও সে নিজেকে খুব ক্ষুধার্ত বলে মনে হয়েছিল।
আমি আমার জীবনের সবচেয়ে বড় শিক্ষার একটি শিখেছি যা সেই ছেলেটি আমাকে কথোপকথন ছাড়াই শিখিয়েছিল। তিনি আমাকে ভালবাসা এবং সুখ ভাগাভাগি করতে শিখিয়েছেন। আমি আমার 'ছোট অজানা মাস্টার' এর কাছ থেকে এই সুন্দর পাঠটি শিখতে পেরে ধন্য। এই ঘটনাটি সারা বিশ্বে আমার সমস্ত বন্ধুদের সাথে শেয়ার করা এবং সুখে আশীর্বাদ করা আমার নৈতিক দায়িত্ব।
এই পৃথিবীকে বসবাসের জন্য একটি সুন্দর জায়গা বানানোর জন্য বন্ধুদের ধন্যবাদ।
